Follow-up on Seth Godin ( Networking) From Yesterday
Follow-up on Seth Godin ( Networking) From Yesterday Yesterday was a fun day, although the people I was with are all bloggers and I think I saw more than one sign of withdrawal from not being by an Internet connection for more than seven hours! Im not going to put any notes about Seth Godins presentation here because (a) I didnt take any (!!), and (b) there are a ton that Ill link to at the end of this post. Great notes, videos, pics, etc. It was interesting to see the comments from yesterdays post that I titled Im Not Going To See Seth Godin Because they ranged from ya! Right on! to I agree that $50 is too much and unaffordable. I dont disagree with that at all there is no way I was going to pay $50 to do something like this last year. In fact, there are opportunities every week for me to drop $50 on network things here locally that I choose not to do because I dont think the speaker or crowd merits it. However, there are ways to be creative about it Ill share one way to get in for free: Find out who the sponsors are (it shouldnt be hard its usually plastered all over the marketing materials) Network your way into that company Find a decision maker and begin to develop a relationship (remember, it just starts with hi.) Let them know that you are in transition, or that you arent in a position to drop $50, but youd really, really like to go, and do you have an extra tickets that I could have? (or something like that) Obviously, you have to get over the pride thing a little, but I knew the sponsors at this event, and I knew they were scrambling to get all their tickets out! The presentation was awesome, the networking was awesome. It was way cool. So heres my recap. Weeks with lots of work (not me, I was pretty busy with JibberJobber stuff but was ccd on all the coordination e-mails) paid off big time. Seths presentation was awesome. Towards the end of the QA session he asked who wanted to do the book signing, and who wanted to continue QA. About 1% wanted to do the book signing, so we got another 20 minutes or so with QA. Ive never seen a more diverse set of questions, and he answered them masterfully. Ive heard people say (and Seth has also) that Seths blog is where he writes about obvious stuff, and it isnt worth reading. After hearing him for almost 90 minutes yesterday I have a new appreciation for his perspective and thoughts, and dont see his blog as just pointing out the obvious anymore. He wowed me. This is the wordmob team that worked to get Seth here: Here are links to various things that can give you a better feel for what we experienced: Ash Buckles, CTO of BridesClub.com is the biggest Seth Godin fan I know. He had his head shaved by Seth Godin: see it on flicker Steve Spencer, owner of Twelve Horses (which was a major sponsor) had a huge role in this event. HUGE thanks to Steve for being involved and all the work he did to make this happen. You can see him here with Ash (I think Steve did some follow-up shaving on Ashs head: see it on flicker and here are 11 seconds of Ashs fame on YouTube. Phil Windley, local tech superstar took some great notes and has some excellent pictures here. Phil801, one of the founding members of WordMob and owner of TagJungle, with a recap on the day and his mishaps getting Seth back to the airport (pretty funny! Thanks to Jimmy Zimmerman and Brian Corrales for essentially saving the day!!). Chris Knudsen, who has said he isnt blogging for the summer (but seems to blog more than normal :p) has some great notes in an easy-to-read bullet format. Quick comments from the Buzz Booster team on the event (thanks for the photo I stole :p). Finally, true to her name, the NewsPaperGrl has multiple posts broken out into subjects (all of these came out of the presentation): Utah Bloggers Chime in on Seth Godinââ¬â¢s Visit Recommended Books from Seth Godin If Seth Godin was a Teacher I Saw Seth Godinââ¬â¢s Socks Today Thats it for this week have an excellent weekend! Office Etiquette What Not To Do
Office Etiquette â" What Not To Do Happy Monday, everyone! Iâm sure youâre wondering who I am and what Iâm going to discuss as a new columnist for your favorite blog, Ms. Career Girl. So hereâs the 411: My nameâs Meghan and Iâm a 23-year-old public affairs workaholic and political mastermind in the making. I come from a teeny, yet amazing town in Southern Maryland, home of the 10 oz. Bud Light and National Oyster Shucking Championship. Iâm sure you can imagine the change of pace and eye-opening experiences Iâve endured since I moved to Washington, D.C.â¦. where most people are a not-so-well blended mix of genius and crazy. While it is widely agreed that Monday is the suckiest day of the entire week, Iâm hoping I can make it better, just a little, by sharing my stories and advice as a young professional learning the ropes and climbing the ladder of success. Now that you know me, I think itâs time to let Operation: To The Top commence: As young pros, we probably have a lot of time before we land our dream job.You know, the job where you boss everyone around and your salary could support your third home on your private island. In the meantime, there will be a lot of things you wish you had the power to change⦠like your coworkers. Thereâs nothing worse than a coworker you canât stand. The loud eater. The bad joker. The no deodorant wearer. The list goes on and on. For me, I canât stand the egotistical, self absorbed âendurance athleteâ who insults you on their first day at the office. While sweet karma ultimately has a way of dealing with these people, it takes a lot of fist clenching and tongue biting to get through the day. Patience is key. I donât like patience. I tend to practice visible aggravation and irritation â" often confused with symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome. Anyways, in case your coworkers are like me, here are a few guidelines to follow if you want to be well-liked: Donât eat food that isnât yours. If itâs in the refrigerator, itâs safe to assume someone was saving it for later. Donât play your music loud enough for others to hear. While Iâm a fan, bluegrass all day is a little much. Donât sneak out at lunch to practice your bowling skills prior to a company bowling night. Yes, that actually happened. Do have a filter. No one wants to hear about the details of your kidâs failed attempt at potty training. Do keep your hands to yourself. Interoffice dating is awkward. For everyone. Do send someone a puppy picture if theyâre having a bad day. Who doesnât love puppies? If you abide by these guidelines you may not be the office favorite, but at least you wonât be the reason someone wants to poke out their eyeballs. I want to learn from you, too! What are your office etiquette peeves?

5 Tech Skills to Know in Todays Job Market
5 Tech Skills to Know in Todays Job Market The 2016 workforce is a demanding one. Even if you might not be looking for a new career, there are some skills every employee needs to have to be successful especially technologically speaking. Using essential tools like mobile apps to stay organized or understanding basic troubleshooting skills will keep any employee sharp on a day to day basis. Whatâs more, plugging into social media and keeping up-to-date on current work related events will keep you energized and maybe even give you a leg-up on the competition. Social Media These days, marketing yourself is just as important as marketing a brand or company. It doesnât matter what the area of expertise, there are always folks to connect with through social media. Twitter is a wonderful way to find and follow those who have similar areas of business. This is not only good for your own career, but it could possibly translate to business for your employer. This doesnât have to mean checking and updating your feed every day, but stay active in the community as often as possible. In addition, cleaning up your own social media footprint is an especially good idea. Setting up work accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn is a must. This isnât to say you have to be work-oriented all of the time. If youâd like a platform for your family and friends only, just make it private. Speaking from experience, if you have information or media out in the World Wide Web that you donât particularly want clients or coworkers to find, clean it up or get rid of it because I guarantee everyone that you donât want to see it, will. Everyone should be confident in their internet presence. Mobile Apps Thousands of new apps are being invented each and every day. Staying in the know about innovative tools is always an excellent idea. Not only can you keep yourself up-to-date with interesting apps, but there may be fresh tools worth passing along to your co-workers or even management. Tools like Google Hangouts or Slack chats can be downloaded directly to your smartphone so you can let management or your team be aware of critical information at any time from anywhere. If your job requires your team to be in different places throughout the day an app like Locqus allows both the employee and employer to track tasks accomplished throughout the day in various locations. Finally, if youâre trying to be a little more eco-friendly, many apps allow for the creation and storage of many e-forms. These can be transferred to any storage device, like a computer, but all the information is right at your fingertips. These are just a few examples of crucial apps for todayâs businessperson. Most apps are made compatible with the latest devices like the iPhone 6s, but many also work with other devices. Take a look through your smartphone, tablet, or computer, and youâll undoubtedly find an app that will make your life and your co-workers lives a little easier. Microsoft Excel / Google Drive The reason I lump both of these together is the fact that many jobs now require knowledge of various programs such as Outlook, Word, and more. These two tools are extremely valuable for any business person to stay organized and efficient. It shouldnât come as a surprise that knowing how to use spreadsheets is extremely common in the workplace. That being said, spending some extra time with the essentials like Excel will make your work life much easier. First of all, you wonât have to deal with that awkward âI have no idea what Iâm looking atâ feeling. Secondly, youâll be able to communicate and track just about anything right through a spreadsheet. Many of us (including myself) have not spent as much time as we could have checking out all the interesting things that Excel can do. Do yourself a favor and make some nonsense tables and graphs. Then, the next time your boss wants to know exactly whatâs been going on this quarter youâll already have a professional spreadsheet ready to go. Anything from note taking to writing up a proposal can be done through Google Drive. Spreadsheets can also be done through this system, but some might argue that Excel is a little bit better at getting that job done. Whatever the case, Google Drive instantly saves all updates and edits to any documents. It also doesnât take up any storage on a shared computer which is a definite bonus. Lastly, Google Calendar works well on a laptop and smartphone. You can get and send invites to anyone who might need to know your schedule. Thatâs just a scratch on the surface of all the versatile tools available through the Google Drive. Basic Troubleshooting Restart, hard reset, power cycle, clear cache these should all be familiar terms for you and everyone should know the right time to use them. Calling off a meeting or not being able to do work because of a computer problem is not a favorable situation. Of course, there are always situations outside of our control that do require expert help. However, if you can fix it with a simple solution, thereâs no reason not to do so. Being put on the spot because of a frozen computer or a system crashing isnât ideal, but donât panic. Before you get placed into a situation that is less than convenient educate yourself through online courses or even YouTube videos with instructions. Knowing a few details about basic troubleshooting might just make you a lifesaver when no one can get the projector to work at your next work meeting. Researching / News Watching In the same vein as social media, every good employee should know whatâs happening in the news (in regards to your career). Staying clear about breakthroughs in your field will not only help you to keep your personal goals clear, but it will keep you fresh and inspired. Constantly keeping âyour nose to the grindstoneâ so to speak will lead to an immediate lack of motivation. Share your findings with your team. You never know what kind of creative influence this might have with your group. Needless to say, donât steal anyone elseâs work, but researching and understanding industry standards, as well as possible future scenarios will set you up for inevitable success.

13 Less Obvious Career Choices for Motivated Women
13 Less Obvious Career Choices for Motivated Women A good 50 years ago, women represented a small proportion of the workforce. There were the homemakers, the stay-at-home moms, and the Tupperware ladies. However, today there is a new generation or two grown up with a drive and ambition. They are not looking to be an administrator, a secretary, or a nurse. They want the same career options and opportunities as men. They dare to think outside of the box and seek opportunities outside of the traditional female industries. If you are interested in pursuing a less obvious career path, find a few ideas below. Security Women in security is a great idea. In fact, being underestimated has a lot of benefits. No matter if you are going to manage the security systems of a big office building, provide services for VIPs, or facilitate events, you are going to enjoy your job. Security jobs for women are challenging, give them confidence, and helps them achieve their career goals. The multitasking abilities of females make them extremely suitable for any job in security. 2. Data Analytics Women often have a strong analytical skill. They avoid jumping to conclusions and consider various options and data. If you are any good with computers and databases, you will be able to pursue a career in data analytics. You can be sure that you will not end up in a dead end job. The technological changes drive the industry forward, and the more you practice and learn about the data analysis methods the more valuable you will become for your employers. 3. Civil Engineering If you are looking for a career path that will be safe and provide you with loads of opportunities to grow personally and professionally, as well as promotions, you will certainly want to look around the job market of civil engineering. There are several jobs in governments and large organizations. You can travel the world, discover solutions to new problems, and connect with like minded people. Best of all, you can now complete a structural engineering degree online and change your future and career forever. 4. Project Management Women are considered to be too emotional when it comes to project management. The truth is that the organizational skills make women perfect for the job. At the same time, working with people from all walks of life and communicating with them effectively is a challenge women are happy to take on. Dealing with various contractors, client requests, and keeping employees happy at the same time is a great task for a female leader. There are several great courses on project management, no matter if you would like to start your career in engineering or research. 5. Cybersecurity The number of young women choosing this career path is still low, however, they have a lot to give for the industry. Women are good at paying attention to the details and analyzing data. They are also looking for a career path that is aligned with their personal beliefs and mission. Keeping people and children safe is a strong mission and can be aligned with every job in cyber security. 6. Armed Forces Women in armed forces is no longer a myth, They are a great source of diversity and their views are represented in the latest policies. Women in the army or navy are talented, driven, and understand the importance of protecting loved ones and family values. No matter if you are starting at the bottom, or would like to put your leadership or interpersonal skills to good use, you will find the right career in the armed forces. Apart from job security, you will be a part of a community that is built on trust and collaboration. 7. Law Enforcement Female officers and detectives are no longer a myth. They are a reality. In fact, you will be able to handle some situations better than your male colleagues. Apart from being a police officer and having a hands-on approach to protecting the public, you can also find a back office or leadership career within law enforcement. From collaborating with the public to liaising with other government agencies, there are some great opportunities that will help you put your interpersonal skills to good use. 8. Driving It is time to break down the old stereotypes that women are not good at driving. In fact, there are just as many women on the road as men, and they cause fewer accidents. Still, driving for work is something women are not considering as a career option. The ability to multitask make them good at driving coaches and buses, and their positive attitude toward planning and staying safe will make them some of the safest professional drivers. No matter if you would like to test the latest models or drive a school bus; you will enjoy the responsibility and the challenge. 9. Technical Researcher If your qualifications have given you academic degrees, and you are looking to make the most out of your career opportunities, chances are that you can approach research organizations and large companies to help them complete the technical research.
